TKI’s Director of Curriculum Studies, Dr. Julie Thompson-Dobkin, began Hidden Truths Project in an effort to explain socioeconomic, medical, and philosophical situations in an educational way through art. The project first focused around the use of art to explain epilepsy to those of us without the condition. With this fact in mind, Thompson-Dobkin partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation to bring about cultural awareness and research funding through Hidden Truths: The Mind Unraveled.
The inaugural Hidden Truths: The Mind Unraveled was held in October of 2012. The event showcased the artwork of individuals diagnosed with epilepsy who were featured in Dr. Steven Schachter’s book, Visions: Artists Living with Epilepsy. The event’s success resulted in more than $10,000 in donations to Epilepsy Therapy Project’s work in funding translational research.
Last year, artists from over ten countries found their way to Orange County, CA for the event. Many of these artists came from as far away as Australia for the event itself. As a result of the tireless efforts of those involved, over $50,000 was donated to research efforts.
This year, the third annual Hidden Truths: The Mind Unraveled will take place on Saturday, October 11th in Orange County, CA in honor of Dr. Chris Di Giorgio, a leading UCLA neurologist.
